The Good:
As many of you will no doubt be aware, I am a fan of the immensely talented and entertaining Mr. Gary Oldman. I'd even go so far as to say he's my favourite actor. So I was delighted to hear that he had been honoured at the Empire Movie Awards, being named Empire Icon.
Colin Firth presented him with his award, stating "He is as far as I’m concerned a very strong candidate for the world’s best living actor.” Well said sir!

The Weird:
The title of this movie news story filled me with dread: "A sexy, young, American Miss Marple" - ugh! Why oh why is this happening? Miss Marple is a nosy old woman who solves murder mysteries for the incompetent local police force. Drastic changes are being made to update the character for a Disney film.
Jennifer Garner is set to star as the young Jane Marple. I've got nothing against her, thought she was awesome in J.J. Abram's TV series Alias. Sure, give her a role in a crime thriller or something, but why do they have to call her Miss Marple? They're basically changing everything about Agatha Christie's 'detective' anyway, just write something new! Oh right, everyone seems incapable of doing that at the moment.

The Good:
As the first blogathon on my blog was on Philip K. Dick movie adaptations, it's pretty obvious I'm a fan. So, news this week that Michel Gondry is going to be adapting and directing Ubik, one of Dick's most acclaimed novels, is exciting stuff for me.
Gondry should be used to head-spinning stories after directing Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Science of Sleep so I think he'd do a pretty good job. It has also been stated that the screenplay will remain loyal to the original text, although that will remain to be seen, as most of Philip K. Dick's works get a lot of alterations when transferred to the big screen.

The Bad:
Is it just me or does this sentence from Screen Rant sound like a menacing threat?: "Bay and his Platinum Dunes production company have evidently been courting Lautner pretty aggressively for some time now, and it looks like a Bay/Lautner team-up is officially upon us."
Apparently, the pair sent out a script to all the major studios, which has sparked a bidding war. What is the film about? Well, insiders have said it's Mr & Mrs Smith meets Wanted...yeah, because those two films were both great (not).
Expect lots of explosions, a weak story and Lautner taking his top off a lot to please his Twilight fanbase.

The Weird:
Last week, someone tweeted to the mayor of Detroit that the city should have a statue of Robocop. He politely said there were no plans to erect such a statue but then there was such an amazing amount of support for it that a campaign was created to collect donations.
In just one week $50,000 was raised and now a 7 foot tall statue of the mighty Robocop is imminent! Next up, every city that has a movie character linked to it should get its own statue.

The Good:
Chris Hemsworth (a.k.a. Thor) revealed that he has read Joss Whedon's script for the upcoming multi-superhero movie The Avengers. Here's what he had to say about it:
“Reading the script, it was massive. Everything about it was like, ‘Oh my god.’ I said to Joss, ‘I don't know how you're going to shoot this thing [laughs], but I'm excited to be onboard and let's give it a go.’”
Superheroes + Joss Whedon? I'm the kind of girl who finds that combination immensely exciting. And it sounds like Mr. Thor thought the script was pretty awesome. I cannot wait.

The Bad:
Another Fast and Furious movie. Not only that, who's going to be joining the team for Fast Five? None other than Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson. Not only that (yes, there's more!), there have been threats that this will be the start of a new trilogy.
Vin Diesel had this to say: "If you remember seeing the posters for Fast & Furious, there was no number on the poster. That’s bizarre. That doesn’t happen a lot. It was a subliminal way of saying, 'We’re not going to go on and on and on. We closed up the last three and it’s almost a fresh start.'”
Err, no Mr. 'I love D&D', it kinda just seems like you're going on, and on, and on.

The Weird:
Apparently, Will Smith's daughter Willow is going to be starring in a "re-imagination" of classic Broadway musical Annie. Smith's Overbrook Entertainment production company has joined forces with none other than JAY-Z to develop and produce movies.
“The time is right to bring back Annie to the big screen. Of course, we’re true believers in Willow's talent and believe she will be perfect in this role,” said Columbia Pictures President Doug Belgrad. “Combining Willow with the Overbrook team that reimagined Karate Kid and the spectacular JAY-Z makes this a dream project.”
Who are they going to make a film vehicle for next? The family pets? That guy who played the butler in The Fresh Prince? Oh you never know, it might be a classic.
