Interviews: Joss Whedon, Tim Burton and more

Joss Whedon spoke to Collider about The Avengers, including what kinds of things have been cut from the film: "At some point you stop looking beyond The Avengers movie at your own stuff, you don’t look at that horizon you look at this movie and you go, ‘You know what, The Avengers are more important than I am so these things that I’m obsessed with aren’t necessarily moving the story forward, and therefore they are baggage.’"

Ewan McGregor talked to /Film about Salmon Fishing in the Yemen and his chemistry with Emily Blunt: "You just either get on or you don’t and in my experience I suppose because of the way I and most people go about this, you’re all excited to be making the film and you know what your part is and the job you need to do. If you are working with someone who is as fun as Emily Blunt, it’s easy. She had me laughing for like three months."

Tim Burton chatted to Total Film about Dark Shadows and its dysfunctional family: "I think all families are pretty weird… We’ve just tried to link the supernatural elements into real issues that families face: like the feelings of a teenager growing up, when your body’s changing and you’re angry at everybody; or the challenge of trying to keep the family together – whether they’re alive or dead!"

The cast and crew of Prometheus spoke to the press at WonderCon 2012. Screenwriter Damon Lindelof said: "I think that there’s a quiet suspense to the movie. It really takes its time. If you have a master filmmaker who’s working with incredibly talented actors, you just have to say, “We’re going to be patient. We do not need to have things exploding, every 10 minutes.” It’s a little bit of an old school approach to filmmaking, in that it trusts the audience to have a little bit of patience."

The Saturday Screen Shot #16

Shot from the Screen: Edward Scissorhands

Screenshot: Edward creating an ice sculpture and Kim dancing in the snow

Shot from the Scene: Kim notices the snow outside and heads out into the garden where she finds Edward making an angel out of a huge block of ice. As he chips away, she twirls and dances slowly, reaching out and catching the falling white flakes. A beautiful scene and a great film to watch this holiday season

The Saturday Screen Shot #13

Aptly, this Halloween special is also my 13th screenshot. Here's an image from the film I watch every October 31st.

Shot from the Screen: The Nightmare Before Christmas

Screenshot: The citizens of Halloween Town celebrate in style

Shot from the Scene: The film kicks off with a rendition of 'This is Halloween' with everyone in town joining in the festivities. Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King, engulfs his costume in flames and leaps into the fountain. He emerges in his iconic black and white to cheers and clapping. The annual celebrations have been a success! This scene sets the film up really strongly and showcases the brilliant job Henry Selick and his team have done with the stop-motion animations

Favourite Movies by Favourite Directors

I found this great post over on the blog - Life of a Cinephile and Bibliophile here: http://movienut14.blogspot.com/2010/06/favorite-movies-by-favorite-directors.html which asked for other people to join in. (Note: I've changed the spelling of the title because I'm from the UK!)
So here are a few of my choices for the best movies made by my favourite directors:

The Director: Tim Burton
The Movie: Edward Scissorhands
My reasons: It was the first film of his I saw and it really struck me that this guys vision and imagination is amazing. The story is so wonderful, full of funny and sad moments. It also introduced me to Johnny Depp in a brilliant role.
Other films: Beetle Juice, Batman, Batman Returns, Ed Wood, Mars Attacks!, Sleepy Hollow, Big Fish, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

The Director: Luc Besson
The Movie: Leon
My reasons: My favourite film ever, so I had to pick it! It has a great story and a cast giving awesome performances. I really like his style of directing.
Other films: The Fifth Element, Joan of Arc, Angel-A

The Director: Bryan Singer
The Movie: The Usual Suspects
My reasons: A brilliant suspense thriller with a great twist at the end. I love the cast and the funny, intelligent script.
Other films: X-Men, X2, Superman Returns, Valkyrie

The Director: Christopher Nolan
The Movie: The Dark Knight
My reasons: A truly epic movie - the high point of the superhero genre, which I don't think will be beaten. Awesome ensemble cast giving their all.
Other films: Memento, Batman Begins, The Prestige

The Director: Alfred Hitchcock
The Movie: North by Northwest
My reasons: An exciting thriller with a great cast, story and musical score. Funny and immensely enjoyable, with some of the most beautiful and iconic shots ever seen on screen.
Other films: Blackmail, The 39 Steps, Sabotage, The Lady Vanishes, Rope, Rear Window, Vertigo, Psycho

The Director: Ridley Scott
The Movie: Blade Runner
My reasons: A dystopian sci-fi extravaganza, adapted from one of my favourite author's novels - Philip K. Dick's 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?' Harrison Ford and Rutger Hauer are both incredible and the film is beautifully shot.
Other films: Alien, Gladiator, Hannibal, Black Hawk Down, Kingdom of Heaven

The Director: David Fincher
The Movie: Se7en
My reasons: Really like the premise of this film. Love the dark, rainy setting and the thrilling action and suspense, plus the twist!
Other films: Alien3, Fight Club, Panic Room, Zodiac
